Why Become a Lifeguard?
If you're a beachy outdoors sort who gets satisfaction from helping others, loves a challenge and enjoy team work this might be your thing. It's the real thing. At North Piha you will definetly get the chance to save a life!
You will need to be able to volunteer a minimum two or three days a month for weekend surf patrols between Labour Weekend and Easter and a few extra hours here and there for training.
You dont have to be a gung ho hot shot swimmer but of course you have to be able to swim. We can help from there.

All ages can be involved. Our oldest lifeguards are in their sixties and you can become a lifeguard from age 14.
Kids under 14 can join our Junior Surf where from age we introduce the little ones (Nippers) to beach activities which are fun, build confidence and wont scare the life out of them.
Once kids are 12 and 13 they dont want to hang around with the little ones so we have Rookies who have their own activities and also work alongside a mentor on patrol. This makes the transition to lifeguard far easier as they know what to expect and get to know Clubbies they will ultimately be working with.
From age 14 up you go straight to lifeguarding having completed your Lifeguard Certificate. There is a written, oral and practical exam which we prepare you for.

So what else happens at surf?
This is a wonderful path for personal development. The sky is the limit and we are here to support you in your chosen path. Many of our Clubbies are happy to just be a lifeguard. Thats cool. But if you want to get involved in driving an IRB (inflatable rescue boat) , take your first aid skills to Pre Hospital Emergency Care, Compete in surf sports (running, swim, canoe, paddle board, surf ski , iron man etc) we can take you there. Leadership and skills training can equip you for life. We invest thousand of dollars and thousands of man hours on an ongoing basis to improve our skills and competency.
We have a pretty good social life and many life partnerships and life friendships have started at United North Piha. We have 2nd and 3rd generation families and always welcome new people in to our family.
